Kogan Pet Insurance Review
Kogan pet insurance offers three levels of cover, including accident-only cover, accident-plus-illness cover, and indoor cat cover. Each level of cover provides up to 80% back on eligible vet bills, a choice of excess amounts, and an annual claim limit up to $15,000.
Who is Kogan?
Chances are you’ve already heard of Kogan, especially if you are a fan of online shopping. However, having been around for more than a decade, Kogan now has much more to offer than just an online retail site stuffed with low cost electronics and household goods.
Within its Travel brand, Kogan allows users to book flights, hotels and rental cars. Within its Money brand, it offers access to a Kogan Credit Card and surprisingly, Kogan Super. Also on offer is Kogan Mobile and Kogan Internet – and what we’re here to talk about today, Kogan Insurance.
Within its insurance line-up, Kogan provides cover on car, home, contents, landlords, travel, life and health insurance – and of course, pet insurance.
Like so many pet insurance plans in Australia, Kogan pet insurance is underwritten by Hollard Insurance, a trusted insurer who has secured the lives and assets of over 1 million Australian customers. It is also arranged and administered by PetSure, another dominant name in the pet cover industry.

What We Love
- Low Cost: Comparing costs on a wide range of pet insurance plans, our pet insurance comparison table reveals that Kogan pet cover offers one of the lowest premiums within our comparison. Want to save even more? Be sure to check out our promo codes and discounts page before you apply to access any intro offers you may be eligible for.
- Save at Kogan: If you’re a keen Kogan shopper, you will no doubt be happy to hear that as a Kogan pet insurance policyholder, you will be able to enjoy $10 off a purchase of $100 or more at Kogan.com once a month. To take advantage of this extra, simply keep an eye out for the voucher Kogan sends you at the beginning of each month, which you can use to discount your chosen purchase (valid for 30 days).
- Flexible Options: While Kogan pet insurance no longer offers its Pet Value plan, it does still offer plenty of choice and flexibility within its three other cover options. As an accident-only plan, Pet Primary provides cover for specified accidental injuries including poisoning, toxicity, tick paralysis, snake bites and motor vehicle incidents. Meanwhile, Pet Luxury provides a more comprehensive cover option on both accidental injuries and illnesses, including cancer, diabetes, heart and renal disease.
- Cover for Indoor Cats: Want to cover your indoor cat? With Kogan pet insurance, you can. Shelving cover for accidental injuries – which indoor cats are less prone to – this cover instead focuses on specified illnesses, which include cancer, feline lower urinary tract disease, gastrointestinal problems, heart disease and diabetes.
- Quick & Easy Claims: Kogan pet insurance provides customers with an online portal, making the claims process quick and easy. Kogan states 98% of claims are processed within five business days (once all information has been received). It’s also worth noting that Kogan also allows you to apply for pre-approval before you visit the vet, giving you peace of mind that the treatment your pet needs will be covered.
- Extras: In terms of extras, Kogan pet insurance provides Overseas Cover for travel within New Zealand and Norfolk Island, as well as Emergency Boarding. This feature covers the cost of kennelling your pet should you be hospitalised, up to a sub-limit of $500 on the Indoor Cat and Pet Primary plans, and $1,000 on the Pet Luxury plan.
- Lifelong Cover: On both Kogan’s Indoor Cat and Pet Luxury plans, pets must be aged between 8 weeks and 8 years when cover starts. However, as long as you apply for cover within that timeframe, and then continue to renew your policy with no breaks in cover, your pet can enjoy access to cover for life.
What To Consider
- No GapOnly: While many pet insurance plans provide access to the handy GapOnly feature, Kogan pet insurance does not. Essentially, GapOnly allows access to real time claims when you visit the vet, so you only pay the gap. This can make expensive vet visits easier on the wallet, while cutting back on the amount of time it takes to make a claim manually.
- No Multi-Pet Discount: Unfortunately, unlike many other pet insurance providers, Kogan pet insurance doesn’t seem to offer a discount to multi-pet households. With that being said, you may find Kogan’s lower starting price point on premiums results in a lower overall cost for multiple pets even without a multi-pet discount, compared to higher cost plans that do offer the discount. To find out, be sure to compare costs on all your options thoroughly before you apply.
- Longer Waiting Periods: While waiting periods have to be endured on all pet insurance plans here in Australia, some are longer than others. When it comes to illnesses, Kogan pet insurance has a 30-day waiting period (which is longer than some, at 14 or 21 days). On its Indoor Cat policy, there is a 6-month waiting period on cancer treatment, while on its Pet Primary and Pet Luxury plans, there is a 6-month wait on cruciate ligament treatment. There is no waiting period on accidental injuries, however, Kogan pet cover starts the day after the policy is purchased.
- Cover Drops After Age 8: On Kogan’s Indoor Cat and Pet Primary plans, the reimbursement rate drops from 80% to 65% when the policy renews following the pet’s eighth birthday. This obviously provides less back at claim time, even though premiums tend to increase as pets get older – and as they tend to spend more time at the vet.
- Sub-Limits: As you compare pet insurance options, be sure to take into account not just the overall annual benefit limit, but the various sub-limits that may apply. On Kogan pet insurance, there is a sub-limit of $300 for consultations across all plans, as well as a sub-limit of $1,200 on Pet Primary and $2,000 on Pet Luxury for paralysis tick treatment, and a sub-limit of $2,600 for cruciate ligament treatment (only offered on Pet Primary and Pet Luxury).
- Routine Care: The Routine Care add-on is available at an extra cost across all plans. With this feature, you can claim on routine care costs up to a limit of $120 per year (with no excess). Before you choose this add-on, however, be sure it actually provides more in value than you pay out to add it to your policy.
- Exclusions: As with all pet insurance plans, Kogan pet cover excludes certain types of claims. These include dental procedures and fractured teeth, routine or preventative treatments, some elective treatments, breeding or obstetrics, and pre-existing conditions (which may be claimable after 18 months of no symptoms).
